I have a drive (actually a friends) that I formatted installed XP over ME.

I have a few recovery progs but one only retrieves from the recycle bin (I forget the name), another only goes thru the existing drive to recover lost stuff from the root an everythin (Magic Recovery Pro) an the other only works thru dos but it destroys the OS in the process I think (Spinrite v.6).

He wants to recover a file he used in his buisiness.

Any ideas? unsure.gif

Easy Recovery Pro?
QUOTE
Recovery of data on hard disk.
EasyRecovery offers a solution for the recovery of lost data stored on hard disk. Rather than to write on the disc, this software creates a copy of its contents (the table of the files) in memory in order to facilitate the transfer of the data towards another storage medium. It makes it possible to recover data following various scenarios: formatting of disc, damage caused by data-processing viruses, tables of partition corrompues, current failure, etc. EasyRecovery then rebuilds the data damaged by pattern recognition of the disc. EasyRecovery exists in 2 versions: short, which makes it possible to recover to 25 files, and supplements, not limited on the number of files. This version of demonstration authorizes the identification of the files being able to be recovered. Only 5 files will be recovered.

Thanks Jewellz. This data that I am tryin to recover has been over written with a reformat/install.

I'll give it a try. smile.gif

Edit: Jus looked at the info. That is the same software that i tried first that I couldnt remember the name of. It looks at the root and all over the disk on the existing OS. But it doesnt look "under" the OS to recover data written to a previous install.

Thanks anyways. smile.gif

I've always liked this one, Jan. Just a personal choice. I'm sure Jewelzz picked out a goodie for you, too.

It just seems to recognize the actual files better...and more of them. Others I've tried you're pretty much guessing if you're looking at the right file.

And I've found it to have a better ability to restore a file to your Desktop without it being corrupt.

Oh, wait a minute. (Remind me to read this stuff more closely.) I'm not sure if that will work with a formatted drive. I've only used it for files I deleted.

You think maybe since you "upgraded" from ME to XP, and since that would not be considered "formatting," but "installing on top of" that it would work anyway?

Dunno.

Here's a good one:
HDD Scan and Restoration Program 3.0
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4330.html

Salvation Scan and Restoration Program is developed by Salvation HDD Research Center, the world-famous HDD repair and data recovery research institute which developed numerous professional HDD repair and data recovery software. This program is the only one known professional program which can scan HDD over 136 G directly that need not the support of computer mainboard with high speed. It can utmost afford 2000 G HDD in theory, supports IDE interface only, no SATA or SCSI ones at the present; A breakthrough of this program is that, without depending on BIOS, it can control read and write to the HDD directly, with high-speed, veracity, friendly interface and simple management; there will be an intuitionistic and intact report for the physical defective sectors created after the scanning. The continual defective sectors can be easily skipped; therefore the defective HDD will not get stuck.

There is a “Restorer” in this program which can restore the usual physical defective sectors.

Both floppy disk version and CD-ROM version for this program is available, you can choose one that fits you. Simply follow the instruction you can easily create a bootable floppy disk or CD-ROM after you download the program. Please note that the restoration of the defective sectors will overwrite the original data.
